Introduction
The purpose of this project is to compile and examine LEAD Center data on STEM tutoring to determine if more support is needed in STEM courses. The number of LEAD Center STEM tutors has decreased, even though introductory STEM courses make up a large portion of tutor requests.
Objectives
- Hire two students to analyze LEAD Center data from 2020-2024.
- Identify gaps in STEM tutoring based on D/F/W rates in STEM courses.
- Recommend hiring strategies for STEM tutors based on findings.
Key Findings
- From 2020–2023, STEM tutoring visits increased from 1176 to 1667, while the number of tutors decreased.
- STEM tutors spent an average of 83 hours/year supporting students.
- Courses with the highest demand include College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Chemical Principles.
Recommendations
- Hire a minimum of 20 STEM-focused tutors to meet annual demand.
- Develop a consistent data collection system for student and tutor metrics.
- Request increased funding from the administration to sustain tutoring services.
